Cameroon hit by inuries ahead of Tanzania friendly
Cameroon will be without several of their key players when they face Tanzania in an international friendly on Wednesday in Dar es Salaam.
Top of the injury list is skipper Samuel Eto’o who picked up a back in jury with his Russian side Anzhi Makachkala in their 2-2 draw against Ukranian side Dynamo Kyiev on Saturday.
Doctors of the Russian club have confirmed the striker has been ruled out for days though the media officer of the Cameroon Football Federation claims they are yet to be notified on the players situation.
Eto’o is joined on the sidelines by his “foe” , Alexander Song who suffered a slight knee knock in training with his Spanish side FC Barcelona.
“Song has felt a twinge in his left knee and as a precaution he will not be travelling with the Cameroon squad,” a statement reads on Barcelona’s official website.
The 25-year old equally failed to turn up for Cameroon’s friendly against Albania last November amid rife local media reports that he is faking up injuries to express his unhappiness with the atmosphere surrounding the team.
The former Arsenal midfielder has not played for Cameroon since October 2012 when the team failed to qualify for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations against Cape Verde.
Equally ruled out with injuries are Jocelin Mayebi (Wrexham-Wales) ,Joel Matip (Schalke 04-Germany) and Landry Nguemo(Bordeaux-France) with illness and a knee injury respectively.
Consequently, head Coach Jean Paul Akono has handed last minute calss to home-based players Makon Nloga Thierry (New Stars of Douala), Ashu Tambe (USD of Douala), Bakinde (Unisport of Bafang), Efala Komguep (Coton Sport of Garoua) and Youthe Rostand(USD of Douala) .
The February 6 international friendly will enable both teams warm up for their respective upcoming 2014 World Cup qualifiers in March which will see Tanzania take on the Atlas Lions of Morocco while Cameroon.
