Champions League : APR Rwnda bow out in drama

Panoramic

Simba, who had taken a 2-0 lead to Algeria against Entente Setif, were going out of the Confederation Cup tournament as they trailed 3-0 after 90 minutes. But an added time goal by Uganda international Emmanuel Okwi enabled the Dar es Salaam club to go through on the away goal counting double rule after a 3-3 aggregate tie. Simba played 75 minutes of the match with 10 men after a player was sent off early in the game. In the Champions League, Rwanda champions, APR had victory and qualification pulled away from their grasp in a bizarre end to the match. Etoile du Sahel, the 2007 Champions League winners, were exiting on the away goal rule until Lassad Jaziri made it 3-2 on the day, and on aggregate for the Tunisians. The Tunisians, however, needed a curious added time [12 minutes] in the match. APR were comfortably leading 2-1 with two minutes left in normal [90 minutes] time. Then high octane drama started with Hammed Namouchi equalizing in the 89th minute, before Papy Faty, who had given APR a 2-1 lead seven minutes earlier, was sent off as a melee ensued between players from both sides. In a suspicious 12 minutes of stoppage awarded, it allowed Jaziri to score his second of the game with a lob to keep the Tunisians in the competition. Also in the Confederation Cup, St Eloi Lupopo of Lubumbashi, where Kenyan international Titus Mulama plays, were eliminated. St Eloi failed to overturn the 2-4 away defeat at the hands of South Africa’s Black Leopards after drawing 2-2 in Lubumbashi. Other Champions League and Confed matches involving teams in the Cecafa [Council of East and Central Africa Football Associations] take place on Saturday and Sunday.
