Simba clinch the Tanzania League title
The defeat, the fourth for Azam was widely cheered by Simba SC fans who went wild chanting in the streets.Simba SC were expected to face their bitter rivals Yanga in another League match that has no bearing in the League title at the same venue. Simba top the league with 59 points, which can not be surpassed by second-placed Azam FC even if they beat Kagera Sugar by a cricket score in their last game slated for Monday.
Azam, who have 53 points, needed nothing less than maximum points to remain in contention for the title.
Azam seemed the better side with their strikers led by John Bocco, Mrisho Ngassa and Kipre Tcheche invading their opponents goal at will but could not translate their chances.
The trio’s combination worked impressively upfront, but had trouble in breaking down the Mtibwa defence which was built around team captain Salum Swed, Juma Abdul and Said Mkopi.
The first goal for Mtibwa came in the 27th minute through Awadhi Issa off a well-weighed corner by Juma Abdul for a 1-0 half time lead.
On resumption, Mtibwa, enjoying a friendly support from Simba fans, started where they had left out and made it 2-0 a minute before the hour mark through Abdul, whose 20-metre shot gave goalie Mwadini Ally no chance.
Bocco pulled one back for Azam in the 69th minute when his superb free-kick went straight into the yawning net.
