“We lost with pride, dignity and passion”, Gordon Igesund
South Africa have faded out of the Orange Africa cup of nations after falling to Mali on penalties last night in Durban.
It was 1-1 between the two contenders after 120 minutes and only penalties could decide over the situation. The Eagles emerged victorious with three penalties scored against one. There was beautiful football from each side but the hosts ended up being eliminated after fighting hard and again as well as gaining so many hearts in South Africa. Unfortunately their strong hope could not go beyond destiny. For the Bafana Bafana head coach, Gordon Igesund, it has been a fantastic tournament as they got better and better until their last energy in Durban. “This team has come a long way not only the way they play but also off the field. If you lose, you want to lose with pride. We played well, but we didn’t score the goals…We have proven that we can match anybody. We played a team that is ranked third in Africa and dominated them”, the coach stressed in a post match reaction. Mali coach, Patrice Carteron acknowledged South Africa’s toughness and expressed hope to go further into the tournament. Meanwhile, the Eagles captain, Seydou Keita did not fail to express his strong emotion and feeling for the people of Mali in conflict with Islamic groups.
