Ten people were killed on Monday outside northern Nigeria’s largest city of Kano when the bus they were travelling in rammed into a moving truck, a road safety official said.

The driver of a bus carrying 11 traders to Kano from central Kogi state lost control and slammed into the truck while trying to overtake it at Dakatsalle village, 40 kilometres (25 miles) outside Kano, Kabiru Nadabo, head of Kano Federal Road Safety Commission said.

“Ten people, including the driver of the bus, died while the remaining two sustained serious injuries,” Nadabo said.

Accidents are common on Nigeria’s poorly maintained roads due mainly to speeding and reckless driving.
