An explosive devise went off on Monday in Nigeria’s economic capital Lagos, killing a man and seriously wounding a policeman, a police spokesman and a rescue official said.

“It was a minor wired explosive that went off. A man was killed and a policeman was seriously injured. We are investigating all circumstances surrounding the incident,” Lagos state police spokeswoman Ngozi Braide told AFP.

She did not give further details.

The explosion happened near Festac, a residential western district of Lagos, she said.

The victim of the explosion was identified as a local official of sand dredgers in Festac, an official of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) said.

“The unionist, popularly known by his nickname ‘Apashe’, was killed by the blast while the policemen in his company was wounded,” said the NEMA official, who declined to be named.
