China provides $4.5m in support to Liberian army

According to media reports Friday, the Chinese and Liberians signed the agreement at the AFL’s 2012 Affiliation Day ceremony held at the Edward Binyan Kessely Military Barracks in Schiefflin, Margibi
County located about 20 kilometers east of the capital Monrovia late on Thursday.

Chinese Ambassador Zhao Jianuah signed for his government, while Defense Minister Brownie Samukai Jr. signed for the Armed Forces of Liberia.

Under the addendum agreement, China will next year deliver the
equipment requested and identified and begin training the AFL

In remarks, Ambassador Zhao commended the Liberian government for its efforts at national reconciliation and the development strides it was making, and assured that China will remain a reliable and dependable partner to Liberia.

Also in remarks, Defense Minister Samukai said the assistance will enhance the capacity of the engineering Battalion of the Armed Forces of Liberia to help in the reconstruction of post-war Liberia.

Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf who also witnessed the signing ceremony, said the agreement will help strengthen the capacity of the AFL, and commended China for its continued assistance to Liberia.
