FIFA warns Botswana over government-sponsored tournaments
The world football governing body FIFA, has urged the Botswana Football Association (BFA) to be wary over government’s handing over Constituency football league to the national association, sources said. The privately owned Midweek Sun newspaper reported on Wednesday quoted FIFA as saying that should the BFA fail to honour the instruction from FIFA, Botswana clubs and national teams will be suspended from all international completions.
The paper reports that FIFA has set a deadline on the resolution of the matter and has advised the BFA leadership that failure to comply will come with dire consequences for Botswana football.
BFA said it will address a press conference on the matter on Thursday.
The constituency football league was introduced by President Ian Khama in 2008 as a sports development initiative that was also meant to keep unemployed youth off the streets.
