Four members of the Egyptian armed forces including one officer were killed and four others injured after an explosive device went off near a highway in the city of Rafah on Tuesday.
Security sources confirmed the death toll on Wednesday although responsibility for the attack has not been claimed by any group.
The region has witnessed attacks targeting the police and the armed forces since the overthrow by the army of former president Mohamed Morsi in July 2013.
Reacting to the unrest the Egyptian authorities last year imposed a state of emergency and curfews in North Sinai following the killing of some thirty police and armed troops in simultaneous attacks against the latter.
Last month, an Egyptian court passed life sentences against three people and 15 years in jail against 22 others in connection with the attacks.
