Mauritania polls scheduled around September, October
INEC added in communiqué released late Thursday in Nouakchott that the exact date for the polls will be set after consultation with the concerned political parties.
The polls were previously slated for 11 October 2011 but were finally postponed based on the request made by the opposition parties for all the conditions to be met beforehand.
CENI said it would dedicate the coming months to reinforcing citizens’ registration and improving conditions to acquiring ID cards in close consultation with all electoral stakeholders while working towards improving the voter’s roll.
The Coordination of the Democratic Opposition (COD), an umbrella group of a dozen opposition parties in Mauritania, have rejected the polls, saying they doubted their transparency and credibility.
The COD group is made up parties such as Ahmed Ould Daddah’s Democratic Forces Rally (RFD) and the Islamists of the Tawassoul party.
