Portuguese businessman kidnapped in Mozambique
An unknown gang seized a Portuguese businessman from his office in downtown Maputo where he runs a food company before he was bundled into a car to an unknown destination igniting a kidnapping spree which had struck the Mozambican capital in recent months, APA learns here Friday.
Police spokesman Orlando Mudumane said the kidnappers then destroyed surveillance video after committing the act.
A spate of kidnappings for ransoms targeting businessmen, particularly those of Indian origin, has been on the rise in Mozambique, but this was the first case of a Portuguese citizen being targeted.
Attorney-General Augusto Paulino recently told the country’s parliament that in 2012 there were 14 cases of kidnappings followed by high ransom demands.
Paulino attributed the kidnappings to organised crime. He noted that the criminals selected their victims carefully, in order to extract large sums of money through blackmailing and threatening the victims and their relatives.
