SADC Council of Ministers meeting kicks off in Zimbabwe
Malawian Foreign Minister George Chaponda on Thursday officially handed over the chairpersonship of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Council of Ministers to his Zimbabwean counterpart Simbarashe Mumbengegwi.Addressing the opening session of the two-day Council of Ministers meeting, Chaponda expressed gratitude to fellow SADC member states for the support rendered to Malawi during its one-year tenure as SADC chair.
“I would like to express Malawi’s tremendous appreciation for the support rendered to the Republic of Malawi during our tenure in office. My government wants to express our unwavering support to the incoming chair Zimbabwe,” Chaponda said.
Mumbengegwi said the SADC region was bound by the collective spirit of a common vision, history and future.
The Council of Ministers will precede the 34th Ordinary Summit of SADC Heads of State and Government that is scheduled for next Sunday and Monday.
Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe is expected to assume the SADC chair at the summit, taking over from Malawi’s President Peter Mutharika.
