Sierra Leone’s electoral commission postpones bye election due to lack of funds
Speaking on a local radio station on Tuesday, the Outreach Officer of NEC, Mr. Albert Massaquoi, said the bye-election would now be held on 4th May 2013 and that plans were under way to see that the election takes place on the scheduled date.
Mr. Massaquoi further disclosed that while it is the responsibility of NEC to conduct elections but that the state must provide the financial resources for them (NEC) to meet their mandate.
He also said that they had submitted their (NEC) proposed budget for the bye-election to the government through the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development.
“It is unfortunate that we have to postpone the elections,” Mr. Massaquoi said, and called on all voters in Ward 178 Constituency to exercise patience and understanding. He assured them that by 4th May the Commission would conduct free, fair, credible and transparent election.
