Swazi judge remands journalist, lawyer
A Swaziland High Court Judge, Mpendulo Simelane has remanded The Nation magazine editor Bheki Makhubu and lawyer Thulani Maseko in custody until Tuesday, April 2.By then the two accused will have spent 14 consecutive days in custody, the judge was quoted as saying on Wednesday.
Judge Simelane dismissed an application by their lawyers that they be released on their own recognizance and be duly served with summons when they were to appear before the court.
Among other things, Bheki Makhubu and Thulani Maseko are charged with contempt of court for allegedly issuing and publishing malicious contemptuous statements about the case of King versus Bhantshana Vincent Gwebu High Court Case No. 25/2014, a criminal matter currently pending before the High Court of Swaziland.
Lawyers for Human Rights (Swaziland) expressed concern about the arrest of their member and attorney Thulani Maseko.
