The last edition’s overall second, Nigeria, has emerged overall first in this 18th edition of the African Athletics championships of Porto Novo (Benin) June 26-July 1 with 21 medals. The hitherto title holder, Kenya, has fallen to the second position while South Africa has maintained the third spot. In details, Nigeria won 10 gold, seven of which were won by the women; six silver, four by the women; and five bronze, three by the women. Kenya on its part won 27 medals: nine gold, nine silver and nine bronze. South Africa concluded the podium with 24 medals: six gold, 10 silver and eight bronze. New Records A total of eight records (three in the men’s and five in the women’s) were beaten during the Porto Novo championships. Men: Kenya’s Cabel MWANGANGI(3:35.71) in the 1500m; Kenya’s Kenneth Kipkemoi (27:19.74), 10 000m; and South Africa’s Fourie Lehann (13:55), 110m hurdles. Women: Botswana’s Amantle Montsho (49.54), 400m; Morocco’s Rabab Arafi (4:05.80), 1500m; Kenya’s Gladys Cherono (15:40.04), 5000m; Nigeria (43.21), 4x400m relay; and Nigeria’s Vivian CHUKWUEMEKA (18.86) shot put.
