Elite runners to feature in the Masai Mara Marathon
The event’s technical director, former world 800 metres champion Billy Konchellah came short of revealing the names but expressed optimism that participation of the event will put the local athletes in the right frame of mind for the foreign meetings. “There are about ten top athletes who are eager to run in the wild and I think this will be a good tune-up for them ahead of their respective foreign meetings. The course has been assessed and it can only be an ideal tune-up for the athletes,” said Konchellah. The marathon which is sponsored by local carrier Kenya Airways will be held in Lemek conservancy in the Mara area of Narok County.
The event is set to attract 3,000 local and international athletes, the largest turn-out so far since inception.
Speaking at the function while unveiling the sponsorship, Kenya Airways Commercial Director Mohan Chandra said the proceeds of the 21-kilometre event will go towards various community projects.
“We have engaged professionals to manage this year’s marathon.. We want to assure those who will participate that this year’s event will be memorable,” he said. The Marathon was created with the main objective of raising funds that would then be focused on a few significant activities for the benefit of the community and the environment. The marathon is held annually to raise money for conservation within the Mara ecosystem while raising awareness of the plight of its shareholders. Communities living in the Mara are in need of clean water, sanitation, health care and education.
