Kenya retain Eastern Africa Athletics tournament in Uganda
Kenya won 15 gold, 10 silver and seven bronze medals during the two-day event which concluded in Uganda at Kampala’s Nelson Mandela Stadium, Namboole over the weekend. Uganda finished second with 14 medals while Ethiopia were relegated to the third place with a paltry three medals. Sheila Chepng’etich stole the show, winning four gold medals in javelin, 800m, 1, 500m and relay while Mercy Chebwogen won two gold medals in 3,000m and medley relay. Josephat Ng’eno won three gold medals in 200m, 400m and medley relay with Ambrose Kiptoo and Vincent Tarus adding two gold each. Kiptoo won gold in 1,500m and 3,000m while Tarus posted double gold in long jump and triple jump. Collins Kibet another gold for Kenya in high jump.
Other gold winners were Justus Ng’eno (3000m steeplechase and Duke Ogoti (100m). The team arrived back in the country yesterday with head coach George Ogeto expressing delight over the good showing. “Amassing 33 medals was not an easy task because we were taking part in few events as compared to last time in Asmara, Eritrea,” said Ogeto.
He was also happy that the team won medals in field events, where the country has always fared badly. Other countries present were—Djibouti, Rwanda, Tanzania and Ethiopia. Next year’s championships will be held in Kenya.
