Nigeria: Nigeria invited to World Cup Taekwondo Team Championships
Nigeria will take part in the 2013 World Cup Taekwondo Team Championships billed for Abidjan, Côte D’Ivoire in November, the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) have confirmed.
According to The Punch, the WTF decided to include Nigeria among the 16 countries awaited for the event based on the laudable performances of Nigerian fighters in WTF competition in 2012.
Nigeria Taekwondo Federation (NTF) boss, George Ashiru, has saluted the invitation while noting that it will be a great opportunity for Nigerian athletes to improves on their ranking while measuring up to best fighters on earth.
“We are happy that our athletes will have the opportunity to compete with the best teams in the world at the tournament,” Ashiru said.
“This tournament avails our athletes the opportunity to improve on their rankings towards the qualification for the Rio 2016 Olympics. Their participation will also improve their knowledge in the sport and they will not be shocked whenever they compete with their foreign counterparts at any international competition,” The Punch quoted Ashiru.
In the last edition in Santa Cruz, Aruba 2012, South Korea emerged first while Iran were runner-ups in front of China at the third spot.
