TEAM SPORTS :Tunisia’s handball saves Africa’s face

Their victory over Croatia really did much to restore Africa’s fading prestige. All through the competition, Alain Portes’ boys proofed their worth as African 2012 champs. With a little focus and experience more, they would have made it through to the finals like they did in the 2005 World Championship held in Tunis. In the Women’s category, the Angolans, on their part, were a bit of a disappointment. Their excellent performance at the World Championship earlier this year in Brazil gave Africans reasons to hope for more than they got from Angola. Though, they were not completely swallowed by the big fishes as they knocked down a weak team from Great Britain. Marcelina Kiala and her teammates would have to do better next time to impress their fans. In the Men’s Basketball, two teams represented Africa at the Games: Tunisia and Nigeria. Only one insignificant victory was gotten from the 14 games that both teams played and that was when Tunisia defeated Nigeria. Nigeria went down to history as the team that conceived the most goals in one game (Nigeria 73 – 156 USA). The best performance from Tunisia and Nigeria was to conceive as few as 4 and 6 goals respectively. The situation with the volleyball teams was no different. In the men’s category, Tunisia, African Champions, lost all five games without being able to dominate in a single set. Algeria did not perform any better in the Women’s category as Salima Hammouche and her teammates lost all their games and could only lead in as few as two sets against Great Britain. Much still needs to be done about the state of volleyball in Africa.
