Wesley Kibet wins Nairobi Standard Chartered Marathon
Last years winner Ernest Kibenei who did not feature in this years Marathon set a record time of 2;10;54 seconds that came tumbling down on Sunday morning. Abraham Keter Kipkiyeny finished second in the full marathon race after clocking 2;10;50 seconds followed in third position by Moses Kipkosgei Kigen with a time of 2;11.05 sec. In the women full marathon(42km race),30 year old Salome Biwott Jerono won the race with a time of 2;26;41 seconds.She was followed by Alice Chelangat(2;28;04)while Mercy Chemutai finished third with a time of 2;31;30 sec. The well attended meeting attracted over 19,000 runners drawn from different countries. Speaking after receiving his winning cheque of Kshs. 1.5m(Approx.US $ 17,647),the men’s full marathon winner(Wesley Kibet) said he was delighted with the victory adding that he did not expect to win the lucrative race. He said he will dedicate the win to his family especially his parents for motivating him during his childhood to take Athletics seriously as a potential career.He vowed to defend next years marathon adding that if all goes well, he will aim at breaking the new course record. On her part, Salome said she was happy and proud to win the women’s race.She said apart from defending her victory next year, she will participate in next years International race in Dubai. The well attended Marathon which is part of the Athletics calendar was graced by permanent secretary in the ministry of Youth & Sports James Waweru,Sports Commissioner Gordon Oluoch,Standard Chartered Chief Executive officer (CEO) Richard Etemesi ,Athletics Kenya President Isaiah Kiplagat and several members of Parliament that took part in one of the many races held on Sunday.
