After two consecutive disappointments in 2015 and 2017, the Nigerian national team cannot be allowed to miss another version of the African Cup of Nations. The Super Eagles have missed the two previous versions after their terrible performance in the qualifiers.
However, things don’t seem to get better in the actual qualifiers. Nigeria played the first game of the 2019 qualifiers against South Africa, their main rivals.
The first half seemed to be totally dominated by the locals but they were not able to open the score. Ndidi had two clear chances to score but he lacked accuracy in the final finish.
The second half brought the good news to Bafana Bafana : Rantie opened the score thanks to a great header in the 54 the minute of the game.
Everyone was expecting a quick reaction from the locals. However, Tau succeeded to benefit from a great counter-attack in the 81st minute and scored the winning goal for South Africa.
A first warning for the Super Eagles who will have to show a better performance in the upcoming games to avoid missing another Afcon.
